hello my name is Logan and I'm going to be reading you a story today about a scientist that lived a long time ago it's called Starry Messenger and it's about Galileo Galilei here's a picture of his town and you can see him in the window with a telescope looking up in the sky for hundreds of years most people saw the Earth was at the center the universe and the Sun and the Moon and all the other planets revolved around it they did not doubt or wonder if this was true they simply follow tradition as you can see there's a model of the solar system with the Earth the middle which of course now we know that it's the song it's in the middle but this is what people believe thousands of years ago was it that the Earth was in the middle and the Sun revolve around it then one man look at the sky and wondered what if things are not as everybody believes them to be maybe the earth and the other planets move around the Sun he wrote down his observations but he did not talk about never long time he knew that he could not prove that they were true it would take someone else to do that that scientists name was Copernicus and what he did was he made a model of the solar system with the Earth in the middle Sun and the Moon the Earth revolve around revolving around the Sun and the Moon in the time of the Galileo it away was a country where many great artists writers musicians and Scholars with this was in the 14 and 15 hundreds about 500 years ago and you can see the map of Italy different lead us today either way, he is a combined country where all these little areas in here are part of one nation back then they were all different and for and they were called city-states that were ruled by their own governments and they has a they surrounded a main city in the city of Pisa a little boy was born with stars in his eyes his parents named him Galileo Galileo's thrived in Hebrew play seems like any other healthy child but he was more Curious than most and the stars were always on his mind he studied mathematics and physics and turned out to be a very bright young man who entertain nearest people with His Brilliant off experiments and observations Galileo is our star of the people would say illustrations you can see a depiction of Galileo doing certain experiments you can see here he's on top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa dropping objects below to experiment with gravity 1 Day telescope see here on map of Europe and about all the different things that he did to acquire the telescope night after night he goes through the telescope and wrote down everything he observe then he published his observations in a book which he called The Starry Messenger Eva Leo was amazed by what he could see with his telescope people read Galileo's book and they became inspired he made maps of the heavens and dedicated the four with the four newly discovered stars of Jupiter paper and Andrew were the Grand Duke of Tuscany Casino II the stores that he discovered orbiting around Jupiter were not actually Stars they were moved you can see in this illustration the way that they represented these bones with the larger woman in the middle being Jupiter and the four children seeing the Moon 7 Galileo was famous more and more celebrate the stars and they celebrating Galileo and his discoveries with statues parades and spectacular events in Spain grew in a celebration became extravaganzas but now the church Delaware become too popular by upholding the idea that the Earth was not the center of the universe he has gone against the Bible and everything you need to philosopher that taught me and Ian against the church order to stop believing what he gets with his own two eyes he was summoned to appear before the highest ruler of the Land of Hope don't know with a frayed you knew the people had suffered terrible torture and punishment for not following tradition it could happen to him it was tried in the Pope's court and everyone could see the stars that left his eyes Gary we still has the Stars on his mind don't keep him from thinking about the wonders of the skies in the mysteries of the universe and even when he went blind don't want to keep him from passing his ideas along the others until the day he died but those ideas with Dawn finally more than three the leaders of the very charts that punished Galileo pardoned him and they admitted that he was absolutely right since this is a science book I wanted to leave you with asking a few small Little lu questions their science related and show you how the story can relate to step in the scientific method so I was taken off three steps from something called the scientific method which is what scientists use to answer questions now I want you to think about what we just read and I want you to tell me tell Gavin Leo asked questions and Define problems what questions he asked what he wanted to learn I want you to learn how I want to I want you to think to yourself how does he invest date of questions how does he go about finding out those answers and I also want you to think about how he got the information he needed took it and thought and my conclusions about it and communicated those bonding thank
