Tech savvy students with innovative ideas will get a chance to demonstrate their skills over the course of several weeks as part of the Kentucky Department of Education's Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP). This year, the 2018 STLP Regionals welcomed an additional 500 participants to the events.
More than 7,400 Kentucky students will participate in regional events, where they will showcase their learning by competing in various categories, which include entrepreneurial, instructional, technical or community service projects; digital content creation such as digital art, photography, design, programming, app development and robotics; and technical services such as student help desk and network engineering. This is done through projects, products or services the students created.
Todd County Students participated in the area regional event on Tuesday, December 4th at E.A. Diddle Arena at Western Kentucky University. During the regionals, teams of K-12 students will present their projects to judges. Those with the best project, product or service are invited to compete in the 2019 STLP State Championship.
During Tuesday's competition, students and their project boards filled WKU's basketball court, as well as an auxiliary gym. When it was time for judging, students stood next to their booths and waited to present their projects to judging officials.
Todd County School District had four teams participate in the showcase event:
- Todd County Central High School: Project – Easier Said Than Done
- Student led podcast on various topics pertaining to local and world views.
- Todd County Central High School: Project – Spilled Ink
- Student created literary magazine, showcasing student literary work in writing, narratives, poems, and prose.
- Todd County Central High School: Project – Bracelets for Books
- Student led entrepreneurship project, creating bracelets for sale. All money and donations earned go to Todd County Public Library to purchase books.
- Todd County Middle School: Project – Maker Bots
- Student led project using a 3-D Printer to design and create models.
Todd County Superintendent Ed Oyler said the STLP regional competition is “a great opportunity for our students to really showcase their learning and their leadership skills that they've gained while being in the classrooms at Todd County Schools. STLP provides our students with an opportunity to create, implement ideas and showcase project-based learning”
