Last year was a banner year for the Todd County Central boys’ basketball team as the Rebels started 5-0 and picked up a 4th Region Tournament victory over Monroe County.
With football setting the tone for sports in Elkton, the Rebels continue that momentum into the winter with five-straight victories to open the 2017 season, including an 82-46 drumming of Russellville.
Todd County Central cruised to a 13th District Tournament championship with a 57-43 win over Russellville in the semifinals then a 63-51 win over Franklin-Simpson in the championship.
While the Rebels no longer have last year’s leading scorer Nolan Barrow, they do return Austin Rager, Clayte Weathers and big man John Calvary.
Calvary averaged 13.2 ppg and 9.0 rpg per game last season as he was a dominant presence in the post.
Coach Frank Johnson said last season that he was trying to change the culture of Rebel basketball and made them a team that others did not want to play on Homecoming or Senior Night.
Todd County Central starts the season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clarksville Academy then has a rematch with Bowling Green Nov. 30 as the Purples eliminated the Rebels in last year’s 4th Region Tournament.
