Course Description

English I Overview
Students will study a variety of text types and media while building reading, writing, and language skills. They will gain knowledge, analyze ideas, and delineate arguments through independent and collaborative tasks. The lessons and skills embedded in this course are aligned explicitly to the Kentucky Common Core Standards. ​Students will read, comprehend, and respond to a variety of texts during this course. Students will have opportunities to demonstrate their reading and writing skills by completing formative and summative assessments.
 
Course Goals
  • By the end of the year, flexibly use a variety of comprehension strategies (i.e., questioning, monitoring, visualizing, inferencing, summarizing, synthesizing, using prior knowledge, determining importance) to read, comprehend and analyze grade-level appropriate, complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
  • Compose routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a variety of tasks, purposes, and audiences. -
  • Acquire and use accurately general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening in order to be transition ready, demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.
