if you recognize me then you might recognize me from reading a few books to you a couple days ago and I'm back again I want to do a whole class experiment for you books that are read in the last couple days of open about different scientists and their contributions to the field but I want to do an experiment today if you haven't if you haven't been able to tell already my mom already what am I to do today is someone called capturing carbon what you going to need for this is you're going to need a tablespoon what's a vinegar bottle here drinking glass I've got speakers and stuff here you can use a drinking glass or if you got access to this you also need some baking soda and normal household items why people would have a hard time finding me that and two please send them this is the star of the show here you could either use a rubber glove or you don't have access to that you can use the regular old party going I'll show you both of those so I can so you can see the different procedure I use for those and what I'm going to be doing is what start with so I'm going to use a bigger bigger bigger is the gloves off bigger in the morning clean the water nothing's really going to happen that bad if it gets if you do something wrong it's not that bad is a really harmless experiment what I'm going to do here is I'm going to take a little bit of vinegar I'm going to take tablespoons now you can use a tablespoon but this one's bigger than the average spoon so I'm going to just kind of eyeball a little bit like this is probably a good idea to just put it in about 50 ml or about halfway to the 100 mark on this one right here and what I'm going to do now is I'm going in to take the glove input baking soda into the court now again I don't really have that accurate measurement but against this experiment is harmless as long as you don't create too big of a reaction it's not Farmers really it's you're just going to be making some gas and making some carbon gas carbon dioxide and so once you get the baking soda end of the call you want to stretch it my mistake I meant to put it in this I mean put it in the smaller one here some more in there let's make a little bit of a correction 30 30 or 50 it doesn't matter if you've already put it in there or not but just whatever is fine I'm going to stretch over the top of the stretch the glove over the top of this Rim here MLB this the cigar doesn't exactly fit snug I'm going to be extra careful here and take a hair tie stretch it over the top just so the club doesn't end up this morning off Barbie career and so once you get that physician practice snug on there you can go ahead and take it and turn it over can you conceive well that settles down I'm going to explain to you what's vinegar is a chemical compound that has a chemical formula of hc2 H3 O2 which means it's composed of one atom of car two atoms of carbon atoms of three more atoms of hydrogen and two atoms of oxygen overall elements found on the periodic table you add it to the chemical compound baking soda called soda sodium bicarbonate which music is composed of an atom of sodium an atom of hydrogen atom of carbon and three atoms of oxygen and it creates two chemical compounds when they react and something called a chemical reaction create sodium acetate and carbonic acid and carbonic acid breaks down in the mixture water carbon carbon dioxide or CO2 which is what's causing the bubbles down here in the call him the bubble down here in the bottom of the container and see if I can get those bubbles in their the reason for this reaction is because of a little bit of a chemistry about different elements and chemicals being called acids or bases now I'm going to show you Piper here they're called litmus strips and what they do is when you put it in a face it should turn a different color but unfortunately I can't get it to work with a place but I'm going to show you so I've got it's a little bit of vinegar there in that little Beaker and I got no letting you see it sounds like a an indigo blue purple color but when I put it in here I don't know if you can see that yeah you can see the the difference in cover there now what happens is a litmus test strip when it interacts it reacts and it creates reaction and it turns pink since we're done with that I'm going to take the glove off of and throw it away animal por this make sure that we've made here in to sync and always rented out after you're done I said earlier this is a harmless experiment but even still you should always clean your equipment once you're done because you don't want anything be careful and just making sure you're taking all the right step to being careful and now I want to travel to point so what am I to do here again if you don't have access to a glove you can just use a normal party balloon animals stretch out the here I can get it going in here nice what am I to do exactly spit the I can't exactly fit the symptoms of lead of the Moon over top of the beaker that I just use so I'm going to use a graduated cylinder here all well this is a when you think of when you think of a shape like this if I remember correctly this is actually called a graduated cylinder speaker so what am I do is I'm going to very carefully member Peak I'm being careful because it's glass plastic and that's okay too but what am I to do is I'm going to use best speaker to mode the baking soda into the deep my sticker bottom so much and make sure all that baking soda it's down into there so that actually went a lot easier than I thought it would because the last time I tried this it really was giving me a hard time I should have the majority of that baking soda inside the balloon ready for the reaction and again I'm going to rinse this out because I'm using again here in a second make sure all the baking soda that might have stuck to the bottom of it before you don't want to start a reaction too early make sure that your experiment is controlled nothing bad happens with nothing bad will happen here the worst that can happen is you get baking soda out of your kitchen that the worst thing that can happen in this experiment animal diesel model benigar in there stretch stretch our baking soda balloon wet again Lakeshore but you don't accidentally still too early like I said earlier you might get chemicals all over your kitchen all right now that I've got that on there flip it over to get the baking soda inside of the and that always buys hold on to the barn while it's on there because you never know if something might have or might have maybe gotten weekend like the elastic in this might have gotten weekend by the amount of this release pressure here you never know now we show you what to make sure not happens is my my balloon actually split right there and I had to hold it down Chicago try to start over or if it's not too big of a hole you could try to hold it back down Rodger that make sure all of our lab equipment has written a rented out yet again and now again I'm going to describe to you what happened so when I put the I told you a little bit earlier about how vinegar is an acid and and the baking soda is place and the properties of bases and acids is it when they interact with one another they become volatile which means that they react really easily they start a would you look at that okay I'm going to get this litmus strip real close to the camera Steve white blue Tots in there I think that's from a little bit of baking soda spill on to it that's why I was wrong earlier saying that the witness didn't pick up the faces when they're dry I believe I could be wrong on that one again but I don't know I think it might be I never seen them I might have been wrong let me explain what's happening here we're making we're making two chemicals interact acid and a base vinegar baking soda and we're putting a container where the products of a chemical reaction whereas when you create carbon dioxide is what is Kratom Leaf we're breathing in breathing in air and then what adoption in and bring it to the restaurant body in the air there's a waste product carbon dioxide and so it's a chemical element that we can literally interact with every second carbon dioxide and what we're doing here is we're producing carbon dioxide in a chemical reaction and gases their the fast-moving form of matter so when we try to trap it escape and so that's what it does when it has it has no room to escape and so it just was when do the object and so that's what causes it to especially with the glove and makes it look like there's an invisible hand in the glove and that's what's so cool about this I think that's the main draw to doing this in school stuff is it because it's just looks so interesting that looks like someone's been in your hand but yeah this is just a real fun experiment that I thought I could do with you and just show you coronavirus pandemic and we're all stuck and not able to really do that much in school wise I figured I'd show you something that you probably would do in a straight science class enjoyed this I might come back and do another one if we can find
