Logan continues his series on reading about scientist. This book looks at the work of Wilson Alwyn Bentley.

hello I'm going to read another story for you today this one's also by the scientist it's called snowflake Bentley written by Jacqueline Briggs Martin illustrated by Mary azarian and it's about a scientist that lived a long time ago and revolutionized the way that we see the world especially in winter time today is when Farmers work with aux and sled and cut the dark with Lantern light and live the boy who loves snow more than anything else in the world Wilson Bentley's happiest days or snow storm days watch snowflakes phone is Bitten on the dry grass of Vermont farm fields on the dark metal handles barn door he said snow was the beautifulest butterfly trap of wasps good night butterflies and show them to his older brother Charlie apple blossoms and take him to his mother but he could not share snowflake because he could not say what is mother gave him an old microscope I use it to look at flowers raindrops and Blades of grass best of all used to look at the snow while all the other children built for sand filters Snowball the rooster crows Willy was catching single snowflakes they told me that you started the Ice Z Crystal their intricate patterns or even more beautiful than he had imagined it expected to find whole place that were the same that were copies of each other but he never could really decided he must fine way to save snowflakes so others can see their wonderful design for three Winters he tried drawing snow crystals they always melted before I get finished we can see here in these pictures he's drawing what is microscope but he can't quite get any of them finish cuz they all milk before he can get a boy drawing when he was 16 Willie red camera with zoom microscope he said if I had that camera I could photograph snowflakes Billy's mother knew he could pee would not be happy until he can share what he's saying his father said that fussing the snow is just foolish but still he loved his time when will they were 17 his parents is parents that part of their savings and bought the camera it was taller than a newborn calf and cost as much as his father's heart of 10 cows really with sure it was the best of all cameras here you can see a picture of that camera as you can see it's a lot bigger than what we got today and it didn't take pictures quite as fast it says here that the camera made images on large glass negative is microscope to magnify a tiny Crystal from 64 to 3600 times its actual size even so dispersed pictures were failures no better than Shadows yet he would not quit Mistake by mistake snowflake by snowflake really work through every storm winter ended the snow melted and he had a good pictures he waited for another season one day in the second winter he try to do experiments and it worked really has figured out how to photograph snowflakes he said that now everyone can see the great video in a tiny Crystal what are those days no one cares neighbors laugh at the idea of photographing Snow Snow in Vermont is as common as dirt they said we don't need any pictures really said that the photographs will be his gift to the world are set by the fire or road to town with horse and sleigh really studied snow storm East through the shed door and out of the black tray to catch the place what do you want when you found only jumbled broken crystals he brushed the tri cream with a turkey he waited hours just for the right crystal and didn't notice the cold if the shiver won the snow would melt he breathes in the black tray the snow would melt if he switched the muscle of the hill to smoke Crystal come along wouldn't take snowflake Woodbury he had to work fast with a snowflake would have that right before he can slide it in the place and take his picture someone who's he was able to only make a few dozen somewhere that wants some Winters he made one he made a hundred Willie some of the beauty of nature he took pictures and all seasons in the summer is nieces and nephews rubber coat hangers with sticky pitch from spruce trees then Willie could use them use them to pick up spider with jeweled with water drops in off all night to gently by grasshopper to a flower so he can find it in the morning and photograph to do covered insect see here will he's getting Auto he's definitely mature about 20 years since his mother got him that camera and he's still got a passion for photographing all these small thing what is snoke picture always his favorite gave copies away or sold them for a few since he made special. gifts for birthdays teeth leaving slideshows on his friends children and adults set on the grass and watch while we projected this slide under a sheet over a clothesline he wrote about snow in post pictures in magazines he gave speeches about snow too far away Scholars and neighborhood Skywalker's you are doing a great work set a professor from Wisconsin the little farmer can be known snow the snowflake man but he never grew Rich he spent every penny on his pictures really said there were Treasures in snow I can't afford to miss a single snowstorm he told a friend I never know when I will find some wonderful price other scientists raise money so Billy can gather his best photographs in a book when he was 66 years old Willy's book as gift to the world was published still he was not ready to quit less than a month after less than a month after turning the first page on this book really walk 6 miles home in a blizzard to make more pictures he became ill with pneumonia after that walk and died two weeks later a monument was built for Willie in the the girls and boys who have been his neighbors grew up and told their sons and daughters the story of the man who loves snow 40 years after the after Wilson Bentley's death children his village work to set up a museum in honor of the farmer the farmer turn scientist it is book has taken the delicate snow crystals that wants Blue Cross Vermont past mountains over the Earth neighbors and strangers have come to know of the icing Wonders that land on their own bits thanks to snowflake Bentley now again because that was a book about a scientist I want you to think about some more steps of the scientific method that Willie might have gone through in order to make those pictures were I want you to think about how he analyzed and interpreted data which means basically it means what kind of information did he get from taking pictures and how did he for me like that into something that he could learn from I also need to think about how he constructed explanations and design Solutions so I want you to think about what kind of explains what I wanted I want you to think about how he could possibly explain what little snowflake how they formed and why they wanted such intricate specific pattern and last week the biggest one in my opinion is I want you to figure out how snowflake Bentley develop and use models in his work how he you know how he got a hold of certain models of what he was studying and looked at it to insure to make his job easier basically Mica anything can be a model pictures illustrations three-dimensional of things like sculptures all those candy models I want you to think about what kind of model snowflake Bentley used in his studying of snowflakes and that's about all I've got for you right now thank you for listening and I'll see you next time maybe
